I fell into this FIRE stuff by accident. Don’t worry, I didn’t actually fall into a fire — I’m talking about the acronym Financial Independence, Retire Early. It’s probably the coolest acronym since Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus was shortened to the catchy SCUBA.
FIRE refers to the financial goal of paying off debt, investing and saving to the max and becoming financially independent so that you don’t have to work a traditional full-time job if you don’t want to, hence “retiring” early.
My husband and I got our start in learning about personal finance when our neighbor gave us “Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover” as a wedding gift back in 2004. It was like a life-changing gateway drug that eventually led us to the more hardcore Mr. Money Mustache and then the legions of FIRE lifestyle bloggers who have followed in his wake. Basically, I am now one of them in this vastly crowded marketplace, trying to share some tips on what has worked for me while also establishing a voice in this space to build a freelance writing career.
